Helena Goldwater (UK) -
the genre of botanical painting has long been associated with the
commerce of flowers, the growth of science over Christianity and
the rise of the British Empire. Flowers and wealth went hand in
hand. However, 'flower painting' came into existence originally
as a form of notation, to distinguish poisonous from medicinal plants.
Goldwater's interest came via studying the toxicity of plants and
research into diseases. Alongside this she was exploring 'codes'
and surveillance. From there she discovered the depth of meaning
a plant has represented, reaching obsessive proportions in the Victorian
era.
