Maria Thereza Alves (Brazil)
- (re)Routed Landscape is a site-specific project which explores
the trading history of Liverpool through 'ballast seeds'. Ballast
was generally sand, stone, earth, etc, which was used to balance
ships if their cargo was too light. Arriving in port the ballast
was unloaded (often clandestinely to avoid taxes), and with it came
seeds from all around the world. These 'ballast seeds' could have
been lying dormant for hundreds of years in the banks of the Mersey.
Alves researched sites and dug up seeds, which have then been germinated,
with the help of the National Wildlife Centre. She also invited
individuals from different communities in Liverpool to be photographed
with favourite flowers from their country of origin.
