'I use
white to create a sense of space. On the paintings' surfaces I paint
motifs that are as indefinable as the space is. They could be static
or moving, near or far. The motifs are often crossed out, scribbled
on or painted over to generate importance and enquiry.
Some of the marks used are inspired by things such as a child's
drawing, graffiti, notes in a diary, scribbles, etc. They are used
because of their aesthetic value and also as a vehicle to make the
painting.
The surface of the painting is important, as are the layers of
history beneath. Some marks will still be presnent at the final
layer, giving a suggestion of what went before.'
Born in 1977 in Liverpool, Atkinson studied painting in Southport,
Leeds and Preston [masters].
Upon graduating in 1999 he was awarded a place in a prestigious
London exhibition. This fuelled his commitment and dedication to
making art, in particular, painting. Since then he has been teaching
Art part time, has worked as Arts Officer, curator, and has been
awarded a three year residency.
Although Craig Atkinson's professional career is still in its infancy,
his work is attracting much attention. He has recently enjoyed a
successful solo show in Yorkshire and is currently exhibiting in
Cornwall, Yorkshire and Liverpool.
