John Hoyland was born in Sheffield in 1934. Selected exhibitions include International Young Artist Award Tokyo 1964, Whitechapel Art Gallery 1967, Andre Emmerich Gallery NY 1972, Serpentine Gallery (retrospective) 1979, Macquerie Galleries Sydney 1980, John Moores Winner Liverpool 1982, Waddington Galleries London 1990, Royal Academy (retrospective) 1999, Galerie Josine Bokhoven Amsterdam 2000, Galerie Carinthia-Bohunousky Austria 2002, Art of the Sixties Tate Britain London 2004.

His work has been widely exhibited in Europe and America as well as Britain and is represented in the Tate Gallery and other public and private collections.
