Belonging and Beyond is
a project devised by Veronika Moos-Brochhagen of Cologne and Lin
Holland from Liverpool.
The two artists have worked together on various projects over the
last two years as part of the Liverpool/Cologne sister city twinning.
This project is about the human experience of being connected to
others - belonging - and at certain times, disconnected - going
beyond.
The individual can also be reflective of the larger group; family,
community, religion, city, culture, state, country + etc.
Belonging to a group can help us to define our individuality as
well as prevent us from understanding and communicating beyond it.
The 'borders' we create around ourselves can act as positive or
negative influences at different moments, under different circumstances,
individually or collectively.
Belonging & Beyond will explore these issues and take the form
of a number of large structures covered with a 'skin' made from
old/unwanted coats. The scale of the structures will allow the audience
to physically move through the works. Inside there will be an overlaid
sound-track with voices from Liverpool and Cologne describing stories/moments
(perhaps associated with the coat) when they were aware of belonging
or going beyond.
The project will be realised by working with groups, secular and
non-secular, from Liverpool and Cologne and will be shown during
the Centenary Celebrations and the Liverpool Biennial 2004 at the
Anglican Cathedral, Liverpool, 19. September - 19. November 2004.
It will travel to Maria im Kapitol, Cologne, 17. April - 30. May
2005 and return to the Crypt of the Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral,
Liverpool, autumn 2005.
