Paul Myott and Tom Murphy touch on
the psychological and symbolic essence of conflict and creation.
In Paul's "Brave Old New World" a sapling in the form
of a female, signals her readyness to create life to three other
similar forms she mistakes for living suitors, not knowing any better.
The forms are deadwood stumps of a long neglected fence - the butchered
remains of once proud treelife.
Paul combines this hopeless optimism with semblences of the legend
of Ramon
Berenguer, the Count of Barcelona. In one version of the legend,
the Count when lying mortally wounded on the battlefield, dips his
fingers into his wound and drew four vertical red stripes onto a
white cloth. This became the Catalan flag and the rallying point
for a nation. In keeping with the spirit of the legend, the picture
is painted exclusively with the fingers and is meant to highlight
the struggle for life, against all odds.
